Institute of History and Law

History is a branch of studies that learns events of the past. And Law is a set of rules, made by government, to order the society’s behavior and regulate every aspect of social life. Yet the content of the law today, and the nature of our legal system, can only be fully appreciated through having an understanding of how they have been shaped by history. Combining a law degree with history allows you to benefit from modules that focus on the history of legal thought and practice. The field of “legal history” studies the relationship that “law” and legal institutions have to the society that surrounds them. Legal history is interested in how “law” and legal institutions operate and how they change over time in reaction to changing economic, social, and political conditions.

The Institute of History and Law is focused on training future history professionals that are well-known of how the Law Science was created, developed and transformed with time till the present. The Institute was created by combining the Department of History and Economic Theory of Komi State Pedagogical Institute and Historical Faculty of Syktyvkar State University.

Students who plan to practice in almost any area of law, as well as those interested in the academic study of legal history have much to gain from courses in Law and History. The Program of Study in Law and History offers students a chance to examine law and its relationship to the larger world of social movements, economic change, politics and government – in the context of studying law in a period of time different from our own. It is designed to reflect the present evolution of interdisciplinary university education in our rapidly changing world. The Law and History programme trains students to be self-motivated, ethically aware and critically reflective citizens. Law and History offers students a chance to contrast our present circumstances with the past and the chance to see the deep roots of the social forces that are changing the shape of our own world. The program offers a chance to study lawyers, legal institutions, and the larger society and its interaction with law. The study of law in historical context provides a rich foundation for both practice and scholarship in all fields of law. Students are able to understand the practice of law in historical context, which is beneficial in pursuing legal research and can help you understand the present better.

The Institute of History and Law provides the opportunity to learn about Law and History and, through the study of both, to understand better each discipline. As a student of Law and History, you learn about laws – what they are, how they work and how they change – but with an appreciation of historical context. As well as learning the skills of a lawyer, you learn the skills of a historian.
