Russia is the biggest country in the world. Its territory is 17, 098,246 sq. km., and the population – 146,171,015 people. It consists of 8 federal regions. The capital city is Moscow. Russia is a presidential parliamentary federation.
Russian territory is so large that it stretched out two continents: Europe and Asia. So, we can say that the Russian Federation is a transcontinental country. Its territory is washed by 12 seas and one sea-lake, which belong to the basins of three oceans: the Atlantic Ocean (the Baltic, Azov and Black Seas), the Pacific Ocean (the Japanese, Bering and Okhotsk Seas), the Arctic Ocean (the White, Kara, Barents, Laptev, Chukchi and East Siberian Seas) and the Caspian Sea-lake.
The climate is mostly humid continental in Russia. Russia has all the climatic zones except tropical: tundra, forest-tundra, forests, forests-steppes and semi-deserts. But in Northwest Russia and Siberia it is subarctic. The country’s climate variability is characterized by a big difference between summer and winter temperatures (it gets indeed very cold in Siberia during winter, but it is also very hot in the summer). The average temperature in summer is +18-20°C. The hottest summer is July (+25°C). In winter, temperature vary from -6°C. to -20°C. The coldest month is January (-18-20°C). The wettest months are traditionally October and November (+5-10°C.)
The Russian Federation is an extremely powerfully developed country in terms of infrastructure. There are all means of transport in the country: trains, planes and ferries are mostly used for external travelling between cities and countries. In the city people mostly use buses, trams, trolleybuses, taxis, and the subway. Speaking about subway, it is available in seven biggest cities and there is one underground tram. The tickets are not expensive, so you can easily get from one district to another. Russia has some 630 improved airport facilities, 50 of which are capable of accommodating international flights.
The Russian railway system includes a total of 150,000 kilometers (93,210 miles) of broad-gauge rail, making it one of the most extensive railway systems in the world. However, of this total only 87,000 kilometers (54,061 miles) is in “common carrier” service. The remaining 63,000 kilometers (39,148 miles) serve specific industries or are dedicated railways lines and are not available for common carrier use. The Trans-Siberian Railroad is still considered to be one of Russia’s major achievements, the Trans-Siberian Highway was finally completed in 2015. The highway represents the first time that one could travel a continual stretch of paved road from St. Petersburg in the far west of Russia with Vladivostok in the far east. With a length of 2,100 km (1,300 mi), the longest segment of the road system is from Chita to Khabarovsk, connecting the paved roads of Siberia with those of the Russian Far East. In the state’s planned road construction for 2020-2030, two key focuses will be linking Siberia and the Far East with European Russia, as well as making driving routes between major cities easier.
